Sewing with Kids

Addie (8) has definitely inherited my love of sewing! She has been hand-sewing little animals and selling them at craft shows for the past two years, and is constantly dreaming up projects and sewing things for friends and family. We have a pretty big collection of sewing and crafting books that she loves to pore over for inspiration.

Stitch Love is one of our newer books full of fun hand-sewn project and embroidery designs. Just look at how cute those felt animals are!

Addie wanted to make this project as a birthday present for her little sister Emmy. It is a super cute beanbag toss game with frogs and lily pads.

We made a few alterations to the project using a mixture of felt and cotton fabrics, and sewed most of the project on the machine instead of by hand. This was Addie’s first time using the machine, and she caught on super fast and pretty much wants to use it all the time now!

Here are some of our favorite sewing/crafting books for kids:

Craft-A-Day: 365 Simple Handmade Projects is one that Addie uses ALL the time!
Embroidery for Little Miss Crafty has great embroidery patterns for beginners. (Not sure if this is still in print, but you can probably find a used copy on Amazon.)
Happy Stitch: 30 Felt and Fabric Projects for Everyday is full of cute, fun projects kids will love.
We Love to Sew is my all-time favorite kids sewing book, along with anything else Annabel Wrigley does!
